Hey readers, this is worth checking out:

This rally is to begin to address the issue of gun-related violence, esp. against our youth-This past week-end there were two more homicides at or near schools. I believe that now the number is at 20 homicides of students from the Chicago Public schools and several more who were not students/older etc.

The rally planned for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 1st at 11:00am at the State of Illinois Building (Corner of Clark & Randolph).

One of the main speakers will be Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina’s Church.

Happy birthday CeaseFire!

It’s been eight years since the Chicago anti-violence group took to the streets to fight gang violence.

CeaseFire, which almost died when Gov. Rod Blagojevich cut funding in August, may be back in fighting shape soon.

The Illinois House recently passed a bill that would double the money that CeaseFire lost last summer. However, the Senate still needs to give the bill the OK.

Will CeaseFire be celebrating nine years in 2009? It’s up to Emil Jones.

In the meantime, CeaseFire is reaching out to the public for aid and donations.

Everybody’s stalking?

My sister told me a horrifying story last weekend that involved something called “organized stalking.”

My sister was riding the bus to work one day when the woman next to her struck up a conversation about the book that my sister was reading: Middlesex.

Innocuous, right? Wrong.

“That’s a book about a hermaphrodite, right?” the woman asked.

“I think so,” my sister replied. “I haven’t started reading it yet.”

“I was sexually assaulted by a hermaphrodite,” the woman said.

This is where most people would nod, become uncomfortable, and quickly put on their headphones.

But my sister– being a very nice person– probably looked concerned, prompting the woman to continue her tale.

Apparently, this woman believed herself to be the victim of organized stalking, which is a form of group intimidation—to the extreme. The hermaphrodite was only the beginning.

Victims of organized stalking believe that a group of people has set out to ruin their lives. My sister’s bus buddy thinks that American Airlines is also in on the plot—rifling through luggage for information on potential victims.

Here’s some signs to look for if you suspect that you’re being stalked in an organized fashion, courtesy of multistalkervictims.org.

Symptoms of organized stalking:

__ You find that all of your family, friendship,
and business relationships are going sour
and you have done nothing to cause this

__ You find that “accidental” blocking of you as you walk or drive about, by strangers, has increased dramatically and every day brings several “blocking” incidents. E.g., someone slips ahead of you at the bank machine or
grocery checkout, or with cars in unexpected
places in parking lots. This is about blocking
*far* more often than that which occurs in
normal life, and not the usual occasional
occurrences.

__ You find that financial transactions, purchases,
mailing things or receiving things in the mail
or by courier seem to have lots of “problems”,
more so than in the past

__ Telephones frequently have static or tones or
echoes; you have lots of “wrong number” calls

__ You find that you are having trouble staying
asleep at night, possibly waking up at exactly
the same time every night

__ Knocking on your door, but finding no one there

__ Neighbors seem to be able to “see thru walls”,
shown by sounds from them which “follow” you

__ Repeated evidence of breakins, small scale thefts,
and sabotage both at home and at work

__ Postal and or electronic mail are often delayed
or in some cases blocked

__ Postal mail from your box is strewn around and
damaged

__ Tradesmen always seem to have “trouble” with any
work you hire them to do, make a mess, are late,
overcharge, and in some cases even cause damage
to other things not originally needing work

__ You seem to attract “crazy drivers” on the road
much more often than in the past

__ Automobile repairs often result in other things
being broken which were not when the car went
in to the shop

__ You seem to have much more trouble with noisy
neighbours than before this stalking started,
such as door slamming in apartment buildings,
or oddly timed use of leaf blowers in detached
house neighbourhoods

__ You find strange synchronicities, such as a
neighbour who starts leaving for work at
EXACTLY the same time as you do, over and over,
happening frequently

__ You find kids of all ages often doing annoying
things at a much higher rate than before the
stalking started

__ You find dirt and food spots showing up in your
home after you’ve been out, and you know this
dirt was not there when you left

__ Are you in good health according to your doctor,
yet having unusual illnesses and symptoms?
Such as chronic ‘flu’ when no one else has it?
Or unquenchable itching with no rash? Or sharp
stings with no apparent explanation, especially
while in bed? Or sudden fatigue which almost
cripples you?

__ You find that since the multiple stalking
started, computers at home and work always seem
to have something wrong with them, and others
with similar machines don’t

Ok, according to this list I am most certainly being group stalked. I mean, my computer habitually goes crazy and turns itself on, kids are constantly doing annoying things around me like screaming or sneezing and I am unusually tired all the time…

But, well, that’s not wholly unusual, right? NONE of these things are wholly unusual. According to this list the whole world is most likely being stalked.

Paranoid, anyone?

Still, search for “Organized stalking” on Google and 6,700 pages come up—some seem legit, but many seem completely insane—like the one run by a woman who thinks that stalkers have trapped her cat on her bed using magnetic fields. O…k…

So, organized stalking: Is it a real form of intimidation or egomania?

But, more importantly: Should I start flying Southwest?

The Chicago Tribune reported today that Roky Uriostegui was not in a gang, according to police. Still, they don’t know why he was targeted.

According to the Trib, Uriostegui transferred schools last year when gang members started giving him a hard time. I’ve spoken to the people at CeaseFire Logan Square about kids who live in gang-ridden neighborhoods. If you don’t join a gang, you’re harrassed. If you leave a gang, you’re harrassed. So, what’s the solution?

The death toll of Chicago kids keeps growing. Apparently, Uriostegui was the 10th Chicago public school student shot this year.

What do you think it will take to curb the violence? Do programs like CeaseFire work? How about strict policing? Or do you think the families are to blame?

The Chicago streets claimed another life last night when Little Village resident, 16-year-old Roky Uriostegui, was shot by an alleged gang member on the 2600 block of West 23rd Place.

According to the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, the area has a problem with gangs– the Satan’s Disciples and the Latin Kings in particular. Still, it is unclear whether Uriostegui was in a gang or not.

Following events like this the inevitable question always arises: Was the victim a gang member? Just look at the headline in the Chicago Sun-Times: ‘Innocent kid’ slain in Little Village shooting. Granted, the quotation marks are used to indicate an actual quote, but my initial response to the headline was: “Well, aren’t we snarky?”

Still, the media is not the only group wondering about the boy’s innocence; Chicago residents are asking the same question.

On a message board today, one young woman asserted:

Roky was not in a gang! I know this because I was a personal friend of his! Kids should look at this story and take in consideration how dangerous gangs really are, and how far they are willing to go!

Others were not so sure, like this local man:

Very sad for this young lad, but articles like this usually always state that the kid was great, straight A’s, and then they show his 8th grade graduation picture on the news. Most of the time this is not mistaken identity but the boy was usually a gang member or hanging with them.

The question is: Does it make a difference one way or the other?

Now readers, I want your opinion. Do you think it matters if Uriostegui was in a gang or not?

The FBI announced today that it will join the Maywood, Ill. police in investigating the 2006 murder of Officer Thomas Wood. Wood, 37, was the first officer ever slain in Maywood.

The incident shook the town, as evidenced by the heartfelt posts on an online memorial to Wood.

One poster, going only by the name “Friend,” said:

Dude whats good? You know the other day we were on your corner and had a little vigil for you. It was weird seeing all the squad car lights lit up, cause thats what it looked like the day it happen, except the only difference was I can’t say I was in such hurry to get there now.

Heartfelt or no, it was not sentiment that drove the FBI to take the case. Wood was involved in the Maywood Police Department’s effort to fight gang activity, leading the department to suspect that the murder was gang-related. Gangs, apparently, make the most wanted list.

According to chicagogangs.org, several gangs call Maywood home, including the Black Disciples, the Four Corner Hustlers and the Latin Kings.

This isn’t the first time that the feds have taken a shot at Chicago gangs. Recently, the FBI and Co. cracked down on gang leaders with the belief that without the head the body would fail. Still, gangs continue to rain down terror and bullets on the Chicago streets.

I want to hear from you readers: Will FBI involvement in the Maywood case make a difference? Or are gangs just too much a part of Chicago’s DNA to be spliced?
